Why Explore Raja Ampat by Expedition Ship?

I’ve just returned from sailing onboard Swan Hellenic’s MS Minerva, exploring Indonesia’s remote islands and UNESCO-listed marine national parks — home to some of the most diverse marine life on Earth.
As a passionate scuba diver and snorkeler, I went in with high expectations… and came back with so much more than just great diving.
What surprised me most wasn’t just the reefs or the wildlife — it was how the entire experience came together.
Days That Just Flow
Days on this expedition just felt easy — in the best possible way.
Each morning I’d wake up somewhere completely new, step out onto deck, and take in those unreal Raja Ampat views… limestone islands, glassy water, and that quiet moment before everything starts.
And then the day just unfolds.
Snorkelling, Diving and Whale Shark Encounters
Some days we’d head out by Zodiac, drifting slowly through lagoons like this — those crazy limestone formations rising up around you, the water shifting from deep blue to bright turquoise. It almost doesn’t look real.
And then, without much thought, you’re in the water — snorkelling or diving some of the most pristine reefs I’ve ever seen. Coral everywhere, so much life, manta rays cruising past… and one of the absolute highlights — slipping into the water with whale sharks. Huge, calm, completely unbothered by us. One of those “is this actually happening?” moments.
But it wasn’t all about the water.
Meeting the locals
Some of my favourite moments were the ones you don’t expect — like pulling up to a tiny island and suddenly finding yourself on a floating pontoon in the middle of nowhere, music on, everyone jumping in, laughing… those spontaneous, slightly ridiculous, completely fun moments that just happen on trips like this.
The village visits stayed with me the most.
Arriving by Zodiac, you’d see kids already waiting on the beach — running into the water, laughing, waving. It’s impossible not to smile.
We were welcomed in, shown around, and invited to watch traditional dances — drums, singing, everyone joining in. It didn’t feel staged. Just genuine, warm, and proud. You really feel like you’re stepping into their world, even if only for a short time.
The Moments You Don’t Expect
And then there are the moments you don’t plan.
Like finding yourself on a floating pontoon in the middle of nowhere — music on, everyone jumping in, laughing… those spontaneous, slightly ridiculous, completely fun moments that just happen on trips like this.
Searching for the Wilson’s Bird of Paradise
One morning we were up before sunrise, heading into the jungle to find the Wilson’s Bird of Paradise. It’s hot, it’s a bit of a climb… and then suddenly — this flash of colour high in the trees. Quick, almost surreal. One of those moments that makes you stop and realise how special this place really is.
Life Onboard — Relaxed, Social, Easy
And then there’s life on board.
A small group of people, which makes such a difference. By the end, you’re swapping stories over a drink, laughing about the day, and already talking about what’s next. It’s relaxed, social, and just… easy.
That’s what I loved most about this journey.
You get all the adventure — the reefs, the wildlife, the exploration — but without any of the effort. Everything just works, and you’re free to enjoy it.
Why Choosing the Right Expedition Ship and Itinerary Matters
That’s what I loved most about this journey.
You get all the adventure — the reefs, the wildlife, the exploration — but without any of the effort. Everything just works, and you’re free to enjoy it.
But not all expedition cruises are the same — and choosing the right ship, itinerary and timing makes a big difference to how this experience actually unfolds.
